Brief Summary of Unit:
The staff will have an overview of what constitutes child abuse/neglect and their responsibility to report it.  A power point presentation will be presented to my teaching staff at the beginning of the year.  A discussion will be held dealing with the concerns and observations that teachers have had in their classrooms.  The intent of this activity is to make staff aware of the legitimate concern that we should have for the children in our schools.

Staff will Understand:
1. Staff will become aware of the different types of abuse and neglect.
2. Staff will become familiar with the physical, emotional, and behavior signs of the different types of abuse.
3. Staff will know whom they need to report any indications of abuse to so that they are following the law.

Essential Questions to Guide this Unit and Focus Teaching and Learning:
Staff will be continually updated about concerns dealing with child abuse and neglect.  Staff will be reminded to observe and report any questions that they may have in the welfare of the students.  The principal in helping them follow the law of mandatory reporting will support staff.

Key Knowledge and Skills Students will Acquire:
After working through the in-service, the staff should be able to:

1.      Recognize the different types of child abuse/neglect

2.      Know who to contact in case of suspicions of abuse/neglect

Assessment Plan:
Assessment will be determined by the follow-up discussion that will follow the power point presentation.  The number of follow-up questions that I may be asked through out the school year will also determine assessment.

Learning Activities:
Discussion of power point.

Follow up In-services through out the year.

Notes:
This In-service is being provided to help teacher be more comfortable when they may be faced with a potential child abuse/neglect situation.  The principal (presenter) will be a guide in providing the support the teacher may need when dealing with such a difficult situation.  The Principal will be around to help at all times for those that need that need the help.

Peer Reviewer Comments:
The information presented in this unit is informative and provides the necessary means for teachers to identify and report child abuse instances.  Teachers spend more time with children than any other adult and it is crucial that they are familiar with the signs and different types of child abuse. Teachers also need to be familiar with the law so that they know what to do when they suspect that a child is being abused.  This will provide an excellent in-service for school staff.
